Sen. Trillanes: 'Unahin si Duterte ipa-drug test!'

Opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV welcomed the proposal for politikos to undergo drug testing, saying that President Rodrigo Duterte should be the first to be tested once it is implemented.

“Unahin si Duterte mismo kasi para siyang sabog sa droga kung magsalita at mag-isip,” Trillanes said Tuesday (June 26).

House dangerous drugs committee chair Ace Barbers called for mandatory drug tests for elected officials on Monday (June 24), despite the Supreme Court having declared in 2008 such a policy as unconstitutional.

Barbers went as far as suggesting that the results be made public and anyone who tests positive be removed from office.

The High Court previously voided Section 36(g) of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, which required politikos and those charged with criminal offenses carrying a penalty of more than six years imprisonment to undergo drug testing.

Despite this, Senators Joel Villanueva, Chiz Escudero and Win Gatchalian also threw their support behind the proposal.

However, Senate President Tito Sotto said a law is not needed for elected officials to undergo drug testing.

“We can use some provisions of [RA] 9165 to urge public officials for drug testing,” Sotto said, but did not name the exact provisions of the said law.
